Celebrate with Us
Throughout 2022, the George Mason University community will celebrate Mason’s first 50 years as a university with a series of programs called “Mason at 50.”
Several hundred people assembled at the Fairfax Campus on April 4, 2022, for the dedication of the Enslaved People of Mason memorial in what Mason President Gregory Washington called “a landmark day for the university.”
Mason Vision Day is an opportunity for our community to come together and support the Green Machine!
A University is Born
In 1972, Virginia Governor A. Linwood Holton Jr. signed the bill separating George Mason College from the University of Virginia. With the stroke of a pen, George Mason University, as we know it today, was born. Read more about how Mason will mark 50 years.

On October 17, 1986, the media descended upon George Mason University when economist James M. Buchanan won the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences for his work on public choice theory.
