George Mason alumnus and former track star Rob Muzzio, BS ’87, finished fifth in the decathlon competition during the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Spain. He was one of 10 Patriots who qualified for the Summer Olympics that year.

George Mason University’s iconic cherry tree grove by Mason Pond turns 30 this year. The first trees were donated in 1993 by the members of the student organization Club Nippon in celebration of Mason’s annual International Week.

For almost 10 years, Melissa Cannarozzi has worked in Mason’s Office of University Branding. She has spent half that time taking classes part-time and working on a master of arts in history.

With his colleague, Robinson Professor of Earth Science Robert Hazen, he created and taught Great Ideas in Science, a popular course for nonscience majors.

Mason is celebrating its first half-century as an independent institution and setting the tone for the next 50 years with a yearlong celebration that includes a week of festivities in April.

Robinson Professor James Trefil, who is the third Mason faculty member to reach the milestone of 50 years of service, taught at the University of Virginia for more than a decade before joining Mason’s then brand-new Robinson Professor Program in 1987.
